Lost Nation, Iowa, March 10--John D. Busch was born on the old homestead, northeast of Lost Nation, Sept. 13, 1858 and died March 4th, 1916, at Mercy hospital, Davenport, aged 57 years, 5 months, of cancer of the stomach with which he was afflicted for over 10 years. In the year 1879, Dec. 5th, he was united in marriage with Matilda Louisfield. To this union were born 11 children, Fred of Elwood, John, Mrs. Mary White, (Henry, deceased) Anna, Edward, Mrs. Laura Ruggeberg, Arthur, Esther, Lillian and Raymond. One brother and two sisters survive, Henry, Mrs. Christina Mohr and Mrs. Hannah Auterbeck and four grandchildren. In 1895 he moved from the old homestead to a farm one-half mile north of Lost Nation. In 1912 he moved to his present home. The news of his death brought sadness to all in his passing there is an irreparable loss of a faithful husband to the beloved wife, a kind father to the children, a friend to all and a public spirited citizen. In appreciation of his worth and standing in the community, he has maintained a good name, has prospered, has seen his children grow up about him and has bestowed upon them his love and affection. He has served his fellows as trustee, member of the school board and Vice-president of the First National bank. He was patient in suffering, hopeful to the end and met death unflinchingly. The funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon by Rev. C. W. Cleveland who took for his text John 13.1, the theme "Undying Love". The pallbearers were Geo. Edleman, Ted Myatt, R. E. Cressey, John Sykes, Chas. Guyer and Chas. Schoff. The choir Mesdames Smith, Frazier and Messrs. Burrichter and Dickman with Lottye Dobling, accompanist, sang the following hymns "Lead Me Gently Home, Father," "Someday, We'll Understand" and "The Sweet Bye and Bye." The flower bearers Mesdames Ahrens, Balster, Kammer and Cleveland took care of the numerous floral pieces. There were tokens besides those from the family, from the bank, the school board, the Grammar Room and the High school. Attending from a distance were Wm. Glorifield of Rock Island and Henry Louisfield from Davenport, nephews of Mrs. Busch. The sympathy of the entire community is extended the bereaved family in their great loss.
