Mary Bernadine Bernie McDermott, age 96, of Clinton, passed away Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at Mercy Medical Center North. A Mass will be celebrated at 10 AM on Saturday April 29, 2017 at Prince of Peace Parish. Visitation will be from 4-7 PM Friday at Prince of Peace Parish. Burial will be in St. Marys Cemetery. The Knights of Columbus will serve as casket bearers. The Pape Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Mary was born in DeWitt, Iowa on May 3, 1920, the daughter of Joseph Patrick and Mary Agnes (Ritter) Donahue. She attended Unity School, a one room school house in rural DeWitt and graduated from St. Josephs High School in DeWitt. She married Donald J. McDermott on January 25, 1943 in DeWitt. After 65 years of marriage, Marys beloved Donald passed away in 2008. Mary was very proud of being the first female elevator operator in Clinton at the Wilson building. She had been employed at Beez-Mousel in Lyons and later with the Clerk of the District Court at the Clinton County Courthouse. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt, Prince of Peace Parish and Moose Lodge #63. She enjoyed researching her Irish heritage, camping, dancing, boating, traveling and wintering in Arizona with her husband in their motor home.
Mary is survived by two children; Kathleen Ann Wilson and Gary and his wife Cindy Mootz McDermott all of Clinton; four grandchildren, Brian Wilson, Angela Wilson Coleman, Shawn McDermott and Gail Eddy; six great grandchildren, Robert and Chloe Wilson, Michael McDermott Graves, and Cassie, Curtis and Cate Krupa; a great-great granddaughter Coral Graves and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, four brothers, Joseph, Donald, Gerald and Francis; a sister Margaret Naughton; a sister in infancy and her son in law Robert Wilson.
