Joan C. Stierman, 91, of Clinton, passed away, Friday, February 24, 2017 at Mercy Living Center South, Clinton.

Joan was born November, 21, 1925 in Dubuque, Iowa, the daughter of Harry and Lillian (White) Phillips. After graduating from Dubuque Senior High School, she received a BA degree in economics from Northwestern University (Alpha Delta Pi) in 1947. She married her high school sweetheart, Vincent Stierman, on June 7, 1950 in Dubuque, Iowa; he passed away December 30, 2016.

Joan raised six children and devoted a considerable amount of her spare time to organizations serving young people, such as the Girl Scouts and Child Guidance. She also volunteered many years at the Jane Lamb Hospital gift shop where she ultimately became its buyer. She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, where she served years on the altar guild. She was a member of the Sunoida book club, and Chapter JN PEO. She also loved to play bridge and Jeopardy!, read mysteries, and watch classic movies. She thoroughly enjoyed her sixty-year friendship with Ruth Feddersen, and was known by her family and many friends as a sympathetic listener.

Over 66 years of marriage, Joan and Vince celebrated life by having numerous parties with friends, cooking delicious meals (chili, spaghetti sauce, and homemade macaroni and cheese were family favorites), and traveling throughout the United States on family vacations and overseas, covering three continents. Their love of history, geography, and travel was something they shared with and was adopted by their children.

In the last few years of her life she also found another "sister" in Jen Barr, a neighbor and faithful visitor. Her last couple of years were made richer by the staff of Mercy Living Center South, who treated her like a beloved grandmother.

Survivors include her children, Tara (Alvin) Robbins of La Jolla, California, Jama Priscella of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Stacy (Kim) Stierman of Des Moines, Iowa, John Stierman of Macomb, Illinois, Matthew (Trisha) Stierman of Omaha, Nebraska and Adam Stierman of Phoenix, Arizona; five grandchildren: Sam and Emma Priscella, Vince and Lauren Stierman and Dinah Robbins.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, a sister and a brother.

A memorial service will be held in early June in Clinton for Joan and her husband Vincent. A graveside service and burial will be held the following day at Linwood Cemetery, Dubuque, IA. The Clinton Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Home & Crematory is assisting the family with the cremation.
