The Clinton Age, Clinton, Iowa, April 9, 1886

The funeral of the late Robert Howat which occurred at DeWitt last Tuesday was largely attended. A delegation of his brethren of the Clinton County Bar from this city went out to attend the funeral and pay the last sad rites to an upright and honorable member of their body and an ornament to his profession.

Mr. Howat had been ill for some time past and in hopes of regaining his former vigor took a trip to Florida. But his last illness though slow seemingly to have taken a firm hold upon him and on March 26 he gave way to the inevitable and quietly passed away.

Mrs. Howat who accompanied him left with his remains for home on March 28. The train was delayed by floods so that the remains did not reach DeWitt till April 5.

Robert Howat was born in Ayrshire, Scotland, in 1855 and came to this county in 1875, settling in Clinton County, DeWitt, since which time he has been an honored and esteemed citizen, a conscientious advocate and loved by all who knew him. A large circle of warm friends mourn his departure and extend heartfelt sympathy to the mourning relatives.
