The Clinton Age, Clinton, Iowa, January 28, 1881

Not only does the grim reaper take those ripe for the harvest, but enters our homes, and takes the tender flowers therefrom, takes the childish prattler and ambitious youth. Last Sunday the unbidden guest crossed the family threshold of Mr. and Mrs., F. E. Bachelder, and took away their son, Ernest, aged 9 years. Ernest was one of the brightest little boys in this city, and his parents and friends centered much hope in him for the future. For about two weeks the child had been ill with scarlet fever, and it was generally believed that he was getting well, but he suffered a relapse, and died quite suddenly Sunday, at one o’clock. His father was at the time at Deadwood, in the Black Hills, but was at once telegraphed. He started for home at once, but did not reach home in time to attend the funeral, which took place Tuesday. The bereaved mother was rendered all the assistance in the power of kind and sympathizing friends, but the grief for the loss of her boy, entirely overcame her. The sympathy of the entire community is with the mourning family.

He reaps the breaded grain at breath,
And the flowers that grow between
