Jean Thola, age 51 of Preston, Iowa, died Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at Genesis East Hospital, Davenport, Iowa. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, January 9, 2017 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Preston with Father Phillip Kruse as Celebrant. Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m., Sunday, January 8, 2017 at the church. Inurnment will take place at a later date. A memorial has been established in her memory for local causes. Jean was born on December 23, 1965, the daughter of Bill and Janice (Kilburg) Portz in Clinton, Iowa and was raised on the family farm near Spragueville, Iowa. Jean attended Preston High School, and graduated with the Class of 1984. She enjoyed Home Economics. She was also involved in FFA during high school, where she met the love of her life, Darrell Thola. They dated throughout high school and married on November 22, 1986 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Springbrook, Iowa.

Early in their marriage, Jean and Darrell lived in rural Spragueville at which time Jean worked at the Pacific Coast Feather Co. in Maquoketa. They moved to Preston in 1989 where Jean did home day care, worked at the Miles Bakery, Browns Jack & Jill Grocery Store, and Kellys Greenhouse. She was currently working for Clinton National Bank in Preston and surrounding branches. Jean also worked for many years at a number of local restaurants including, the Dew Drop Inn with her family, and the Hometown Café, both in Preston. She was currently working at Spruce Harbor Inn in Bellevue, Springbrook Country Dining & Catering, and she helped at her mother-in-law's restaurant, Andrew Cafe.

Jean was involved with the Festival of Trees in Preston for many years and her home was included in the Tour of Homes in 2016. She enjoyed gardening and attending to her many flower gardens around town. She also enjoyed spending time with family playing cards and swimming in her backyard swimming pool.

Jean will be dearly missed by her husband of 30 years, Darrell; her parents, Bill and Janice of Spragueville; her mother and father-in-law, Elaine (Eldon) Hoerschelman of Bellevue; five siblings, Mike (Joy) Portz of Miles, Denise (Brian) Krogman of Preston, Dale Portz of Spragueville, Julie (Paul) Serdar of Wadsworth, Illinois, and Patty (Mark) Petersen of Clinton; five brother- and sister-in-laws, Lois (Al) Mussmann of Bellevue, Dan Thola of Bellevue, Lori Palmer of Bellevue, Donell Thola of Bellevue, and Doug (Melissa) Thola of Indian River, Michigan; many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews whom she loved like they were her own.
