Herbert "Herb" J. Freyer, 90, of Preston, Iowa passed away on Wednesday, January, 4, 2017, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Funeral services will be take place at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 7, at Saint John's Lutheran Church in Preston. A visitation will occur from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 6, at Saint John's Lutheran Church. Burial will take place immediately following the funeral service at Clinton Lawn Cemetery. Pallbearers will be David S. May, Matthew May, Dustin Freyer, Brittny Myers, Stephanie Morgan and Patrick Clarkson. Honorary Pallbearer is Leo Trenkamp. Lemke Funeral Homes assisted the family with arrangements.

Herb was born March 6, 1926 in Moline, Illinois the son of Herbert and Lydia (Marske) Freyer. He was a 1944 graduate of Lyon's High School, Clinton. He was united in marriage to Patricia Reynolds on September 27, 1948 in Morrison, Illinois. They had three children - Sandra, Stephen and Daniel. Patricia preceded him in death in June of 2004. He later married Mildred Clarkson on February 18, 2006 in Preston, Iowa.

Herb joined the Army Air Corps. in 1944 and was a tail gunner on a B-17 bomber during WWII. Recently, Herb was surprised and elated when his grandson, Matthew May, setup and joined Herb for a Honor Flight from Cedar Rapids to Washington D.C. in 2013. Following his military service, Herb returned to Clinton and worked at Clinton Corn, retiring after 44 years.

Herb enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping - just loved being outdoors.

Herb is survived by his wife Mildred of Preston, IA; his three children - Sandra (Dave) May of Muscatine, IA, Stephen (Helaine) Freyer of Louisville, KY and Daniel (Mary) Freyer of Fort Branch, IN; two step-children - Ellen (Phil) Catarella of Slidell, LA and Patrick (Debbie) Clarkson of Buchannan, MI; grandsons - Matthew (Mindy) May, David S. May, Stephanie Morgan, Dustin (Heather) Freyer, Brittny (Jason) Meyers; with six great-grandchildren and seventeen step great-grandchildren

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, three sisters, one grandson and one step grandson.
