Meryne L. Henning, 80, of Calamus, Iowa, died Friday, November 4, 2016, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
Meryne was born May 28, 1936, to Ellis and Margaret (Christensen) Mueller, in Calamus. After graduating from Calamus High School, she attended the University of Iowa for two years. She was united in marriage to Douglas Henning on June 3, 1957, at Faith Lutheran Church in Calamus. She taught school for one year, was a homemaker and worked part-time as a bookkeeper for many years in her father’s business, F. Mueller & Sons Seed, Feed, and Grain. The couple farmed in the Calamus area until retirement in 1999.
Meryne always felt blessed by her family and with a twinkle in her eye lived her faith by selflessly wrapping love around everyone with whom she came in contact. Meryne was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and was involved in many church activities, several of which included ladies groups and sharing her love for music by singing in the choir, leading a children’s choir, and singing in small groups both at the church and in the community. She often was an accompanist with her guitar or the piano. She loved canoeing in local rivers as well as the BWCA. She enjoyed being with her family and friends, traveling, musical events, playing cards, bowling, golfing, sewing, puzzles, crafts, quilts, and attending as many of her kids’ and grandkids’ events as possible. Her travels were often with her two sisters to visit nieces and nephews or to her favorite states, Hawaii and Colorado.
Surviving her are her children, Daryl (Doreen) Henning of Calamus, Karna (Jeff) Wieck of Coralville, and Kevin (Jolene) Henning of DeWitt; grandchildren, Blaine (Kayla) Henning, Ashley (Troy) Steffens, Justin (Laura) Wieck, Leah Wieck, Abigail (Brent) Yotty, Rachel Henning and Grant Henning; great-grandchildren, Jalen, Jackson, Jordan, Anya, Oscar, Austin, Brenna, Carter, McClain, Cameron, Tanner and Tysen; siblings, Mardelle Baur and Alois Erickson; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband of 59 years.
Visitation will be from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Sunday, November 6, at Faith Lutheran Church, Calamus. A Service of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am Monday, November 7, 2016, in the church with the Rev. William Runaas Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Kvindherred Cemetery, rural Calamus.
Memorials may be made to Camp Courageous, Faith Lutheran Church or the Palliative Care unit at U. of Iowa Hospitals.
