Essie Mae Austin, 66, of Clinton, Iowa passed away at Mercy Medical Center - North on April 4, 2016. Funeral services will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 9, at the Greater True Love Baptist Church. A visitation will occur two hours prior to the funeral service from 12:00 p.m. to time of service at the Church. Additional services will take place in her home town of Ponchatoula, Louisiana. Burial will take place at the Mitchell Family Cemetery in Springfield, Louisiana. Lemke Funeral Homes is assisting the family with arrangements locally and the N. A. James Funeral Home in Hammond are in charge of arrangements in Louisiana.
Essie was born February 27, 1950 in Ponchatoula, Louisiana the daughter of Jessie and Genevia (Berry) Gudiry. Essie was united in marriage to Matthew Austin on April 24, 1971 in Ponchatoula, Louisiana.
Essie loved God and loved attending services at the Greater True Love Baptist Church in Clinton, Iowa. She worked for many years as a CNA for the former Harbor Crest Nursing Home.
Essie always put everyone else's needs before her own, she loved helping others. Her main priority was taking care of her family with whom she loved dearly, especially her grandchildren.
Essie is survived by her husband Matthew of Clinton, IA; one daughter - Chiquita Austin of Clinton, IA; one son - Matthew Jr. (Jena) Austin of Clinton, IA; nine grandchildren; four sisters - Faye (Hertis) Davis of Clinton, IA, Jessie Mae Gudiry of Clinton, IA, Clara Russell of Ponchatoula, LA, Beatrice Broadenaux of Davenport, IA; one brother - Jessie (Bertha) Gudiry of Clinton, IA; One aunt - Alice Hookfin of Ponchatoula, LA; with many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends she has met throughout her life.
Preceding Essie in death were her parents and one brother Lawrence.
Memorials made can be directed to the wishes of the family.
