John D. “Red” Boland age 91 of Clinton, died Thursday, March 10, 2016 at The Alverno Health Care Facility. Funeral services will held at 10:30 AM on Monday, March 14, 2016 at the Pape Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 2:00 to 5:00 PM Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Clinton Lawn Cemetery with military rites conducted by AMVETS Post 28. John was born in Armstrong, Iowa on June 17, 1924, the son of Thomas and Rose (Quinn) Boland. He graduated from Strawberry Point High School. He served with the U.S. Army Medical Corps in the European Theater during W.W. II. John married Beverly Petersen on May 14, 1955 at St. Mary’s Church in Clinton. Beverly passed away on December 31, 2011. John was a machinist with the Rock Island Railroad for many years. He was a member of Prince of Peace Parish, the former Odeon Club, AA, NARVE and the Clinton Bowling Association where he bowled for several years in the 55+ league. John never missed any of his grandchildren’s activities and he was very proud to have taken the Honor Flight in April of 2011. He enjoyed playing cards and was an avid Chicago Cub and Iowa Hawkeye fan. John is survived by his daughter, Cheryl (Jay Wilson) Boland of Clinton; two grandchildren, Quinn Gunderson and John Gunderson both of Clinton; a sister, Peggy Hardy of Cuyahoga Falls, OH; a sister-in-law, Norma Stafford in California and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two brothers, Chuck and Matthew and three sisters, Kay, Anita and Ann.
