Haufe, Lillian Ruth 1918-2016

Lillian Ruth Haufe died January 14, 2016 , at The Alverno in Clinton.

She was born in Holyoke, Massachusetts to Gustave and Frieda Miegel, August 24,1918. She moved with her parents to Milwaukee, WI at age 7, graduating in 1935 from North Division High School there. She attended the University of Wisconsin where she received a BA in English and an MA in Speech in 1940, performing a leading role in Strindberg’s “The Ghost Sonata” during the 1939 inaugural season of the University’s then new Union Theatre. She taught high school English for one year in Manitowac,WI. She married fellow Wisconsin graduate Dr. W.David Haufe,M.D.,at Milwaukee in June,1942. While Dr.Haufe served as a medical officer on the USS New Mexico in the Pacific during WWII , Lillian inspected tents for the US Army at Fremont, NE. After the War, and stays in Boston, MA and St.Louis, Mo., she and her husband moved to Bloomfield, Iowa in 1949, where her husband joined the Gilfillan Clinic and Lillian was a homemaker. She moved to Clinton in 1997 after the death of her husband in 1995. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother and sister, and one son.

She is survived by son Stephen Haufe (Elizabeth) of Clinton, and grandsons David Haufe (Sara) of Chicago, IL , and Capt. Paul Haufe of Ft. Sam Houston, San Antonio, TX. Lillian was active in T.T.T., P.T.A., Cub Scouts, Historical Society and Fine Arts Council in Bloomfield, and Sunoida in Clinton. She was a member of the Clinton Art Association. Lillian travelled widely, having visited most of the US, part of Canada, part of South America, the Dalmatian Coast , Europe, England, Spain, Greece, Russia, China, Cambodia and Thailand, Mexico, the Caribbean, and part of Antarctica.

She appreciated very much the good care she received at Prairie Hills and The Alverno in Clinton, and from Dr. Barakat and Dr. Harb. She was blessed with many great friends including Erika Hansen, Anne Lehman, Jane Whipple, and Maxine Hegge of Clinton ; Delores Lanman , Karen Spurgeon , Doris Schoonover, Shirley Redmond, and Dorothy Gentry of Bloomfield ; and college classmate Frances Benn. She was particularly close with her cousins Victor Schiesske of Massachusetts and Noreen Buckley of Alabama, as well as with her late husband’s nephews David Haufe and Donald Haufe of the Chicago area. No services will be held at this time, Snell-Zornig Funeral Home is assisting the family. Internment will be later date in Pine Grove Cemetery, Wausau, WI. Memorials may be sent to the Clinton Art Association or Clinton Showboat Theatre.
