Shirley A. Richards, 89, of Clinton, passed away peacefully, Monday, December 7, 2015, at Eagle Point Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Clinton, surrounded by her three children.

A private family service will be held on Thursday, December 10, 2015, at the Clinton Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Clinton Lawn Cemetery.

Shirley Anne Crook was born on February 7, 1926, in Pittsburgh, PA, the daughter of Thomas and Anna (Ely) Crook. She was educated in the Allegheny County, PA school system.

Shirley was united in marriage to Francis Richards on March 23, 1957 in Clinton, IA. Francis passed away on October 1, 2006. Prior to her marriage, Shirley was employed at the Clinton Garment Factory.

Shirley was an active member of the First United Methodist Church. She taught Kindergarten Sunday School for many years, and was active in the ladies church circle and the sewing group.
While her children were growing up, she was active in the PTA, was a “room mother” for many years, and served as a Cub Scout den mother and a Brownie troop leader.

Shirley was an avid golfer and golfed for many years at Valley Oaks Golf Course where she also belonged to the Ladies Auxiliary.

Shirley was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed making teddy bears and other animals. She was also involved in the Erickson Center’s knitting and ceramic clubs for many years.
Shirley is survived by one daughter, Carol (Bud) Mielkey of Clinton, IA; two sons, David (Kathy) Richards of Goose Lake, IA, and Bob (Lara) Richards of Donahue, IA; seven granddaughters, five great-grandchildren; one brother, David Crook of Orting, WA; two half-sisters: Karen Kwiatowski of Edinboro, PA, and Linda (Wayne) Miller of Cambridge Springs, PA, one half-brother: Lee Crook of Loras, SC.

She was preceded in death by her parents, step-mother, husband, sister, two brothers, one half-brother; a step son and two sons in infancy.

The family requests that memorials be made to the Clinton Humane Society of First United Methodist Church in Clinton, IA.
