Virginia L. Shields, 84, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, formerly of Clinton, passed from this life and entered her home in Heaven on, Saturday, November 28, 2015 at the Maplewood Care Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Funeral Services will be 10:00am, Friday, December 4, 2015 at the Church of the Open Door -Clinton. Interment will be in the Clinton Lawn Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Bryan Buhman, Brian Shields, Les Shields, Mike Shields, Ric Shields, and Travis Shields. Visitation will be Thursday from 4:00-7:00pm at the Church of the Open Door. Virginia Louise Hardison was born on October 17, 1931 in March, Missouri, the daughter of Oren Oscar and Verna Anna (Bales) Hardison. She married Lester A. Shields on February 19, 1950 in Clinton, Iowa; he died July 17, 1996.
Virginia first served as a cashier at the “Dime Store” in Clinton, IA. She also worked at Neilson’s Coupon Clearing House. In later years, she served as an assistant at Snell-Zornig Funeral Home, Nelson Funeral Home and Cemetery and as an in-home caregiver before moving to Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1998. There, she was employed as an assistant at Floral Haven Funeral Home and Cemetery until she retired in 2002.
Virginia attended the Camanche Assembly of God Church for 20 years where she served as the Church Board and Sunday School Secretary in addition to being the pianist and organist. She became a member of Church of the Open Door in Clinton, IA in 1988. She enjoyed singing in duets and trios and was often asked to be a vocalist at area weddings and memorial services. Virginia often played the piano in sing-alongs for the residents at the care center where she had lived since 2009.
Virginia is survived by three sons: Les (Joanne) Shields of Clinton, IA; Mike (MonaRé) Shields of Pembroke Pines, FL; and Ric (Sheila) Shields of Tulsa, OK; one daughter: Verna Shields of Camanche, IA; 8 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; and one sister: Wanda Leola Anderson of Westminster, CO.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, and two sisters.
