Isabel Ruth Schmidt was born on July 7, 1917 on a farm near Mansfield, Minnesota, the sixth of George and Louise (Steele) Schmidt's seven children, five girls and two boys. At the age of four, she entered both Sunday school and grade school. After attending eight years of school in a one-room schoolhouse, she attended high school in Alden, Minnesota, graduating in 1935.
Isabel's ambition was to be a teacher, so she went on to Teacher Training classes in Austin, Minnesota and continued her training at Winona State Teacher College. She taught all eight grades for five years in a one room school house in Minnesota
Isabel moved to Clinton, Iowa in 1942 and lived with her sister and brother-in-law. She worked for a year at Climax Engineering. While working there, she was instrumental in helping to form a union for the workers. She became the recording secretary for the Machinist Union. She met Leonard Naeve and married him on September 20, 1943. In 1944 she returned to teaching and enjoyed five more years of working with children.
Leonard and Isabel farmed from 1943 until 1984. They raised two daughters: Becky (Jim) Triplett of Clinton and Debra Naeve of Pacific Grove, California. While raising her family, Isabel was asked by Pastor Schoenbohm to help start a Sunday school in Andover, Iowa. It was a success and she was the superintendent for many years. As a result of the Sunday school, Faith Lutheran Church was formed.
Leonard and Isabel were married for over 50 years before he died on March 13, 1994. Just one year later, almost to the day, Isabel was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma. She moved into Sarah Harding where she lived until recently moving to the Alverno.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, four sisters, and her grandson Andrew in 2009.
Memorials can be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
