Barbara S. (Work) Hagenson age 80 of Clinton, passed away Monday, August 25, 2014 at her home. Visitation will be from 11:00 A.M. until 1:00 P.M. on Friday, August 29, 2014 at the Pape Funeral Home. Funeral services will begin at 1:00 P.M. A luncheon will follow the services at the Arboretum. Online condolences may be left at www.papefh.com.

The daughter of Birney and Virginia (Butler) Work, Barb was born in Homewood, IL on April 22, 1934 aka Earth Day. She took her stewardship of reducing, recycling and reusing seriously and could find more uses for a scrap of paper then just the grocery or to-do list, which often including shopping for books at Goodwill.

She received her Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from the University of Iowa. Her love for words went beyond once a year and often-late Christmas card greetings to byline articles about butterflies and ballet to writing poetry, where she was known to agonize over a word or phrase for days.

Best known as the Butterfly Lady, Barb raised monarchs for more than 50 years, tagging them for 40. If there was a cause or group, most likely she was involved. Her passions also include meditation and reiki, yoga, theater, women in theology, retreats at the Canticle and her grandchildren.

Barbara is survived by three daughters, Susan (Takashi Konishi) Hagenson of Tokyo, Japan; Kristin (Charlie) Bienert of Des Moines; Kari (Brad) Hemingway of Rockledge, FL; three grandchildren, Brody, Alexis and Tyler and Dr. Paul Hagenson.
