HAMMER, SCHMIDT, LANKTON, SWIFT

Robert Hammer, age 84, of Clinton passed away Sunday, July 27, 2014 at his home. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, August 2, 2014 at St. John Lutheran Church. Visitation will be from 10:00 A.M. until the funeral time Saturday at the church. The Pape Funeral Home is assisting. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Brennan Hammer, Jim and John Swift, Ray Theisen, Mike Clark and Bob Assenmacher. Honorary casket bearers will be Reid and Thomas Hammer and Gene Niebuhr.

Bob was born in Lyons, IA on January 31, 1930 the son of John and Minnie (Schmidt) Hammer. He attended Lyons High School and the Cedar Rapids Barber College, graduating in 1956. He married Norma Lankton at the First Presbyterian Church in Clinton on December 12, 1953. He operated Bob Hammer's Barber Shop on Main Ave. from 1957 until November of 2003, when he retired.

Bob served with the Army Air Corps from February 11, 1947 until February 11, 1950. He was stationed in Germany and participated in the Berlin Airlift as a Weather Observer from November, 1948 until June, 1949. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church where he was very active in church activities. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, his morning coffee at Nora’s Café with the guys and was an avid Chicago Cub and Iowa Hawkeye fan. He was a member of the AMVETS, life member of the VFW, life member of the Disabled American Veterans, the Berlin Airlift Association and had volunteered for Mercy Auxiliary.

Bob is survived by his wife Norma; three sons, Michael (Debbie) Hammer of Richmond, VA, Jeffrey Hammer of Clinton and Terry (Deb) Hammer of Cedar Rapids; three grandchildren, Reid and Thomas Hammer of Katy, TX and Brennan Hammer of Cedar Rapids and a very special cousin, Jerrie Swift of Rock Island. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Raymond. Memorials may be made to St. John Lutheran Church or Mercy Auxiliary. Online condolences may be left at www.papefh.com.
