Edward J. Fowlkes, 91, of DeWitt, Iowa, died Friday afternoon, August 8, 2014, at Genesis Medical Center-DeWitt.
Edward James Fowlkes was born July 30, 1923, in Sioux City, Iowa, to James Edward and Lela (Worthem) Fowlkes. He graduated from Mumford High School in Mumford, Tennessee. He served in the Air Force as a radio radar mechanic during WWII. Ed was united in marriage to June Merriman on July 26, 1951, in Senatobia, Mississippi. The couple resided in the Chicago area until 1976, when they moved to DeWitt. Ed worked for the government, retiring in 1980. He went on to work for the hospital in DeWitt for 20 years.
Ed was a member of the Eugene McManus American Legion Post #238. He loved bowling, gardening, fishing, cutting paper snowflakes, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
In addition to his wife of 63 years, June, he is survived by his children, Dan (Linda) Fowlkes of Davenport, Carl (June) Fowlkes of Lisle, Illinois, Tom Fowlkes of Rector, Arkansas, Christie (Mike) Grosshans of Houston Texas, Kim (Sam) Means of Moline, Illinois; 9 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; sister, Wilma Soderlund of DeWitt; and a niece.
Ed was preceded in death by his cousin, Bob Feirn, a niece, Barb, and brother-in-law, Larry Soderlund.
The family will greet visitors from 10:00 until 11:45 a.m. Tuesday, August 12, 2014, at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt. A Memorial Service will follow at 12:00 noon, at the funeral home. Pastor Dianne Prichard will officiate. Burial will be at Rock Island National Cemetery at a later date.
