John A. (Big John) Tobin age 70, of Clinton, passed away Saturday, May 3, 2014 at Crestridge Nursing Home in Maquoketa. Visitation will be from 9:00 – 11:00 AM on Wednesday, May 7th at the Pape Funeral Home. Services will be held at 11:00 AM. Burial will be at a later date at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
John was born in Clinton on December 7, 1943, the son of Raymond M. and Muriel (Swanson) Tobin, Sr. He served with the U.S. Navy for 23 years onboard the USS Robert K. Huntington, USS Dale, USS Saratoga, USS Valdez, USS Lehay, and the USS McDonough. He taught radar-men electronics in Glynco, GA and later at Great Lakes. He retired as a Chief Petty Officer. He later was employed at ADM, Mississippi Belle, Frontier Motor Inn and as a driver for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad. He was a member of the Catholic faith. He enjoyed golfing, singing karaoke, playing Santa Claus, and following the Cubs, Bears and Hawkeyes.
John is survived by two brothers, Ray (Diana) Tobin Jr. of Clinton and Joe (Barbara) Tobin of Iowa City; two sisters, Carole Zimmer of New Brighton, MN and Patricia Steines of Clinton and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers-in law; Paul Zimmer and Arnie Steines, and a niece Tracey Curtis. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
