Gerald R. Hoffmann, 70 of Charlotte, Iowa, died Friday morning, June 27, 2014, in the comfort of his home.

Gerald Richard Hoffmann was born August 15, 1943, in Delmar, Iowa to Joseph and Leola (Herrig) Hoffmann. He attended school at St. Joseph Catholic School, Sugar Creek, Iowa. Gerald farmed most of his life. On April 28, 1962, he married Marilyn Stevenson at Assumption Catholic Church, Charlotte. In his early years he was employed as a mechanic at John Deere dealers in DeWitt and Clinton and as a welder at John Deere Plow and Planter in Moline. Gerald also worked in various factories. In the late 80's he began a trucking business which he owned and operated until retirement in 2013. Gerald will be remembered by many for his custom haying and harvesting.

He was a member of Assumption Catholic Church, Charlotte, the Knights of Columbus and was a strong supporter of Relevant Radio. Gerald enjoyed playing cards, traveling, visiting with people, spending time with family and two cylinder John Deere Tractors.

Surviving are his wife, Marilyn; children, Jeffrey (Lori) Hoffmann and Brian Hoffmann of Preston, Iowa, Lori (Terry) Messerich of Charlotte, David (Michelle) Hoffmann of Clinton and Kevin Hoffmann of Charlotte; grandchildren, Erin (Scott) Foust, Kara Hoffmann and Rileigh Hoffmann. Jessica Hoffmann and Brian Hoffmann, Jr., Natasha (Jason) Ritchie, Brandon (Sabrina) Schroeder, Sadie (Trevor) Kleppe, Tyson Schroeder, Jade Schroeder, step granddaughter Ashley Steen, Miya Messerich, Madison Messerich, Carter Messerich and Parker Messerich, Nicole Hoffmann and Matthew Hoffmann, Kaile Hoffmann and Korbin Hoffmann; great-grandchildren, Jackson Foust, Cora, Wyatt and Lila Ritchie, Brody Schroeder and two Baby Schroeder's due in September; siblings, Verna Powell of DeWitt, Iowa, Phyllis Berthel of Bellevue, Iowa, LaVonne Tillis of Pearl City, Illinois, Shirley (Kenny) Green of Forreston, Illinois, Joseph (Doris) Hoffmann, Jr. of Charlotte, Janis (Jerome) Burken of Elvira, Iowa and Connie (Julius) Kuberski of Stockton, Illinois; numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding Gerald in death were a great-grandson, Coen Ritchie, his parents and a sister, Lois McClimon.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 3:00 until 8:00 p.m. Monday, June 30, 2014, with a rosary at 4:00 p.m. The Funeral Liturgy will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 1, 2014, at Assumption Catholic Church, Charlotte with the Rev. Fr. Scott Lemaster and Deacon Mike Sheil officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jeffrey Hoffmann, Brian Hoffmann, Lori Messerich, David Hoffmann, Kevin Hoffmann and Terry Messerich. Honorary pallbearers will be Wayne Schoel, Tom Stevenson, Rae McClimon, John Gluesing, Gerard Banowetz and Howard "Fuzzy" Boyer.
