Einar Ingvold Nels Simonson, 91, of DeWitt, died Monday morning, June 9, 2014, at Westwing Place, DeWitt, Iowa.

Einar Simonson was born August 2, 1922, in Douglas, North Dakota, to Johanna (Gustofson) and George Simonson. Einar and Wilma Paarmann were united in marriage on September 26, 1942, in Kahoka, Missouri. He was inducted into the U.S. Army on January 22, 1945, at Fort Sheridan, Illinois. He served overseas with the 5th Replacement Department and the 702nd Replacement Company, Battery A 743rd Anti-Aircraft Battalion at Manila in the Philippines. Einar was honorably discharged at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas on June 26, 1946. Einar had worked at Gostick Plumbing & Heating in DeWitt before, and shortly after, his military service. He and Wilma then started farming in the Grand Mound area. They farmed from 1947 until their complete retirement.

Einar was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Grand Mound. He was also a member of the Grand Mound American Legion Post #622. Einar enjoyed square dancing, round dancing, fishing and traveling throughout the country with Wilma in their RV. He and Wilma wintered in Florida for 8 years, followed by winters in Harlingen, Texas, for 22 years. His favorite traveling experience was a trip to Germany and Norway in 1998, where they visited family.

Surviving are his wife, Wilma; his children, Sharon (Norman ) Harruff of Galveston, Indiana, Marcine Simonson of Clinton, Iowa, Einar E. (Janet) Simonson of DeWitt, and Dale (Norma) Simonson of DeWitt; grandchildren, Michael Maksymicz, Lisa Hall, Brian (Ronda) Simonson, Matthew Simonson, Mark Simonson, Adrian Simonson, Andrew Simonson, Amanda Simonson, and Adam Simonson; 4 great-grandchildren; siblings, Margaret Bartels and Luther (Sharon) Simonson; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Paarmann and Evelyn Steward; brothers-in-law, Del Roy (Janet) Lieberg, Walter Rud, and Earl Paarmann; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Kathrine Ann; a brother, Gerhard; sisters, Loretta Rud, Jeanette Lieberg, Eleanor Mickelsen; brothers-in-law, Ralph Mickelsen, Ray Paarmann, and Herb Paarmann; sisters-in-law, Margaret Simonson, Marion Paarmann, Grace Paarmann, and Sadie Paarmann.

Visitation will be from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Friday, June 13, 2014, at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt. A Service of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 14, 2014, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Grand Mound, Iowa, the Rev. Steven Anderson officiating. Burial and Military Rites will follow at Elmwood Cemetery, DeWitt.

Memorials may be directed to Skyline Center Inc., Clinton, and Immanuel Lutheran Church, Grand Mound.
