Eugene J. Eckelberg, 87, of DeWitt, Iowa, died Thursday morning, June 12, 2014, at Maquoketa Care Center, Maquoketa, Iowa.

Eugene John “Slim” Eckelberg was born March 27, 1927 in Maquoketa, Iowa to Louis and Luella (Keeney) Eckelberg. He grew up and attended school in the Spragueville area. Slim served in the Army and fought in the Korean Conflict, attaining the rank of Master Sergeant. He was united in marriage to Barbara Lou Fuglsang on February 24, 1954, in Maquoketa, Iowa. The couple farmed and raised their family in the Grand Mound area.

Slim was a member of the Eugene McManus American Legion Post #238 of DeWitt, and the O'Connor-Regenwether VFW Post 3633 of Maquoketa. He was a lifelong avid Cubs fan. Slim enjoyed playing cards, gardening, and traveling with Barb and their friends.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Barb; children Dennis (Carol) Eckelberg of DeWitt, Linda (Poe) Williams of Binghamton, New York, and Pam Becker of Grand Mound; 7 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; sisters, Marjorie Boell of Hayfield, Minnesota, Vivian Roe of Maquoketa, and Eloise (Harry) Rubel of Otter Creek.

Slim was preceded in death by a son, Jeff, a grandson, Dillon, his brothers, Louis “Bud” and Donald “Deck”; a sister, Muriel “Mimi” Allan; and a son-in-law, Del Becker.

Visitation will be from 2:00 until 5:00 p.m. Sunday, June 15, 2014, at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt. A Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 16, 2014, in the funeral home. Burial and Military Rites will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Grand Mound.
