Merle Lester Vance, 88, of Charlotte, Iowa, died late Wednesday evening, May 21, 2014, in his home.
Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. Tuesday, May 27, 2014, at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, Iowa. Funeral Service will follow at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery, DeWitt.
Pallbearers will be Alan Wallerich, John Vance, Denny Grantz, Dick Grantz, Gary Vance, and Terry DeLarm.
Merle was born October 5, 1925, to Lester and Helen (Atherton) Vance, in Camanche, Iowa. He attended country school in Clinton County. Merle served in the Army. He married Charlotte Barnett. They later divorced. Merle worked on the family farm for about 35 years, after which he drove truck and worked as a mechanic.
Merle enjoyed the outdoors, horseback riding, bowling, fishing, and hunting.
He is survived by his son, Jerry Vance; grandchildren, Jeremy, Matthew, and McKenna; 2 great-grandsons; a sister, Dolly Rose Vance; nephews, Gary Vance, and Terry (Mollie) DeLarm; 3 great-nieces.
Merle was preceded in death by his daughter, Debbie; a grandson, Jacob; and his sister Delila Rickertsen.
