Carlyn Johanningmeier, 74 of Luana, Iowa, died early Thursday morning, April 10, 2014, in the comfort of his home, surrounded by family. He died as he lived with determanation and strong will.

E. Carlyn Johanningmeier was born April 15, 1939, in Monona, Iowa, to Roy and Viola (Loftsgard) Johanningmeier. He was a 1957 graduate of Luana High School. At a young age, Carlyn began farming the family farm and was proud to keep it in the family for over a century. On January 30, 1966, he was united in marriage to Juanita "Red" Hardin in Galena, Illinois. Farming was number one in Carlyn's life and he and Red also owned and operated a small trucking company which is still currently in business.

He dearly loved the land that he farmed and enjoyed time with his family, golfing and classic cars. Carlyn was a man of few words, but when spoke it was often meaningful and humerous. He also was very inventive and creative and will be dearly missed.

Surviving are his loving wife of 48 years, Red; children, Ray (Brenda Lamb) Richard of St. Olaf, Iowa, Brad (Laurie) Richard of Luana, Rick (Anita) Richard of Monona, Tony (Ginger) Johanningmeier of Des Moines, Iowa, Dana (Julie Peterson) Richard of Garnavillo, Iowa, Susan Johanningmeier and Lori (Jeff) Frick of DeWitt, Iowa; grandchildren, Bill and Randy, Amanda and Andrew, Jon, Chris, Adam and Maddie, Lindsey, B.J. and Kaity; several great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; a brother, Virgil (Betty) Johanningmeier of Waukon.

Preceding Carlyn in death were his parents and a brother, Merlin.

The family will receive friends at Leonard-Grau Funeral Home in Monona, Iowa, from 2:00 until 6:45 p.m. Monday, April 14, 2014. A service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Monday in the Funeral Home with the Rev. Marshall Hahn officiating. Interment will be held at a later date.
