The Clinton Herald Saturday September 19, 1942 p. 5 Lyle M. Jefferies, Sr., 52, of 750 South Bluff boulevard, prominent real estate and insurance agent here, died at his home at noon today, following an illness of more than six month. Mr. Jefferies' father John Quincy Jefferies was one of Clinton's pioneer real estate and insurance agents, establishing the business here in 1893. Since Mr. Jefferies father died in 1937, he had headed the business as manager. Mr. Jefferies became associated with the firm in 1907, following his graduation from Clinton high school. Aside from his real estate and insurance business, Mr. Jefferies was owner and operator of 213 acres of Clinton county farm land and considerable business property in the city of Clinton. Mr. Jefferies was a director in the Clinton Federal Savings and Loan association, was a past inheritance tax appraiser; Home Owners Loan corporation appraiser; and was one of the original members of the Clinton Real estate board. He was extremely active in business and civic circles here, being past president of the Clinton Real Estate board, member of the National Real Estate board, past president of the Iowa Association of Insurance agents, and for four years he was a regional vice president of the Iowa Association. Mr. Jefferies was one of the organizers of the Clinton Association of Insurance agents and he belonged to the National Association of Insurance agents; the Clinton Chamber of Commerce, of which he was a past director; Rotary International; the Clinton Community Federation; the Y.W.C.A.; and was past chariman of the mmebership committee of the Clinton Country club. He was a member of Emulation lodge, 255, A.F.&A.M., a 32nd degree member of DeMolay consistory, A.A.S.R. Masons, and a member of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. Mr. Jefferies' hobbies were many and varied, principally boating, fishing, football and baseball. Mr. Jefferies was born here Feb. 16, 1890. He was preceded in death by his parents. His wife, the former Theodora Sylvanus, whom he married June 21, 1913, in South Bend, Ind., survives, as does his son, L.M. Jefferies, Jr. 824 Twelfth avenue, South, who was associated with him in business, and a daughter, Mrs. Robert Lee Daly, Iowa City. His grandchildren, James Q. Jefferies, Clinton, and Robin Lee Daly, Iowa City, also survive. Funeral arrangements are pending.
