HOLLERAN, OCONNOR, MCDONNELL, MILTNER, WALSH, PRENTISS

The Clinton Herald; Saturday January 20, 1962; Page 10 Frank L. Holleran of 1712 N. 2nd St., believed to have been Iowa's oldest practicing attorney, died at 9:30 a.m. today in Mercy hospital. He was 92. The body is in the Delaney funeral home, where friends may call. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. The dean of the Clinton County Bar Association, Mr. Holleran began practice in 1891 at 86 1/2 Main AVe., and continued in the same office until stricken recently by the illness which eventually was fatal. He was the senior member of the law firm of Holleran, Holleran and Shaw in which a son, Paul B., is a partner. Mr. Holleran was born May 14, 1869, in Fulton, Ill., the son of James S. and Adelia O'Connor Holleran. He came to Clinton in 1877. He was graduated from Clinton High School in 1888, from Northern Illinois College at Fulton in 1890 and from the University of Michigan law school in 1891. He received a 50-year pin from Michigan U. 11 years ago and was the last surviving member of his class. He had practiced law as an associate of William C. Grobe here before opening his own office on Main Avenue. He was the only active member of the Clinton Couinty Bar Association who had practiced in the old frame Clinton County Courthouse located at the site of the present courthouse. He practiced there in an era when it was customary for lawyers to wear silk tophats to "Block Eight" as the courthouse was called by members of the bar. Mr. Holleran served as a first lieutenant in the army in 1898 during the Spanish American War. He was a member of Company L. He was made a lifetime honorary member of the Iowa State Bar Association; was a past president of the Clinton County Bar Association and was a member of the American Bar Association. He was active in many civic and community groups and had served as president of the Lyons Commercial Club and the L.Y.M.A. He was a former member of the Kiwanis club; a member of St. Irenaeus parish and its Holy Name Society; and a member of the Knights of Columbus. Mr. Holleran served on the committee which was responsible for the routing of U.S. Highway 30. the Lincoln Highway, through Clinton. He was married June 12, 1900, in Clinton to May McDonnell. Survivers include three sons, F.J. of Greenwich, Conn., Paul B. of Clinton and C. Brent of Westfield, N.J.; two daughters, Mrs. Leo J. (Jeannette) Miltner of Davenport and Mrs. E.C. (Miriam) Walsh of Indianapolis, Ind.; one sister, Mrs. C.L. Prentiss of Omaha; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sisters, one brother and two grandchildren, Lt. David Holleran and Frank Holleran Walsh.
