Clinton Daily Herald Wednesday August 25, 1897 Vol. 30 No. 306 C.S. Mallary The Sudden Death of a Well Known Clinton Citizen Charles Scott Mallary, who resided with his nephew, Mr. Calvin M. Inman, at 227 Second avenue, was found dead in his bed, Tuesday afternoon at four. Mr. Mallary had been in poor health for some time, but his illness was not considered dangerous, though he suffered a great deal from asthma. Monday he was in the yard, but was not able to be downtown. Tuesday morning he said he did not feel like getting up, so his breakfast was brought to him. At noon he felt no better, and did not eat much. Mr. Inman was at the bedside most of the time, as the patient had to be fanned. At a quarter to four Mr. Mallary fell asleep, and Mr. Inman left him and went downstairs. At four he returned only to find his uncle dead, from asthma. Deceased was born in Pultney, Rutland county, Vermont, May 7, 1843. He larned the carpenter and joiner trade, and worked at it until September 3, 1862, when he enlisted in Co. F. 14th Reg., Vermont Inft. Volunteers. He served for a year, when he was honorably discharged, on account of his health. He then returned to Vermont, and resumed his trade. In 1891 he came to this city, making his home with Mr. and Mrs. Willbur M. New, who then were conducting a restaurant. After Mr. New's removal from the city, Mr. Mallary made his home with his niece, Mrs. Ida Young, who died three weeks ago. There are no brothers or sisters left, Mr. Mallary having been the only surviving member of a family of five children. The only living relatives are Mr. John Mallary and Mr. C.M. Inman of this city, Mr. Charles Mallary of Camanch, Mrs. Jennie New and Mrs. Lewis Parker of Middletown, Vt. cousins or nieces. The deceased was much beloved. he was a staunch Republican and a great admirer of its platform and principles. He held membership in the G.A.R., U.V.U., I.O.O.F., K.A.L.G.P., I.B.S., Loyal Orangemen, and Jr. American Mechanics. Funeral services from the Bowman church Thuresday morning at 10, conducted by Rev. F.X. Miller, under the direction of the G.A.R.
