Evelyn J. (Mrs. Hobart "Hoby") Carstensen, 80, of DeWitt, Iowa, died Wednesday evening, April 17, 2013 at Genesis Medical Center-DeWitt.

The family will receive visitors from 3:00 until 6:00 p.m. Sunday, April 21, 2013, at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt. A Service of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 22, 2013, at Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt, with the Reverend Ron Rafferty officiating. Burial will follow in the Kvindherred Cemetery, Calamus.

Pallbearers will be Sherwood Lahan, Ron Fletcher, Donnie Russell, Peter Whitman, Bryan Whitman, and Chance Klug.

Evelyn was born Evelyn Joan Sass, on March 24, 1933, in Rural Clayton County, Iowa to Fred and Jennie (Russell) Sass. She graduated from Waukon High School in 1950. She went on to receive a teaching certificate from Luther College and later Bachelor’s degrees in Elementary Education and History from Upper Iowa University. Evelyn married Ward “Pete” Klug on September 5, 1954. Together they owned and operated the Meadow Mist Motel in Oelwein until his death on January 19, 1965. She later married Hoby Carstensen on December 19, 1970. He preceded her in death on July 16, 2011. Evelyn was an Elementary School teacher at Oelwein, Postville and Calamus community schools, and substitute teacher in many schools. In later years she helped on the family farm south of Calamus.

Eveyln was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church. She was a member of the Calamus School Board for 9 years, and later served on many school committees. Evelyn was the Lutheran Brotherhood Branch Communicator for Our Savior's Lutheran Church for many years, and served as Clerk of Olive Township for several years.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Linda and David Whitman of Grand Mound, and Lans and Karla Carstensen of Santa Clarita, California; grandchildren Peter (Lydia), Bryan, and Karen Whitman, Andrea and Benjamin Carstensen, and Chance Klug; great-grandchildren Ruth and Elizabeth; sister-in-law Bonnie Sass of Emily, Minnesota, brother-in-law Carl Klug of Oelwein; nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husbands, Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, two sons Peter and Lowell, and a brother Fredric Sass. Condolences may be expressed and photo tribute viewed at www.schultzfuneralhomeshomes.com
