Katie C. (Mrs. Henry) Henningsen, 82, DeWitt, Iowa, formerly of Elvira, Iowa, died peacefully, Sunday morning, April 21, 2013 at Genesis Medical Center-DeWitt.
The family will receive friends at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Thursday, April 25, 2013. A Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 26, 2013, at the Funeral Home. Burial will be at Elvira Cemetery.
Grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.
Katie Christine Henningsen was born June 6, 1930 in Tolk, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany to Peter and Auguste Petersen. She was educated in German Schools and attended a Business School. As a young woman, Katie worked in a travel agency. On May 24, 1952, she was united in marriage to Henry Henningsen in Haddeby, Schleswig-Holstein. The couple resided in Germany briefly. On March 10, 1953, they boarded the SS America to emigrate to the United States. Katie and Henry arrived in New York on March 17, 1953, and disembarked on March 18th. They traveled by train to Savanna, Illinois, and settled in the Miles, Iowa, area. The couple farmed and raised their family in the Clinton, Iowa area. In 1976, they built a home near Elvira, Iowa, where they resided until moving to DeWitt in September of 2012.
Katie was a loving, serving wife, mother and grandmother. She did most of the farming while Henry worked in town. She was an avid organic gardener and propagator of African Violets. Katie was an excellent cook and baker. As a homemaker, she was always cooking up or baking something. No one could come to visit her home without being fed. Katie’s breads, cakes and cookies were her specialty.
Surviving are her beloved husband, Henry of nearly 61 years; sons, Birger (Janae) Henningsen of Elvira and Harlo (Julie) Henningsen of Bettendorf; grandchildren, Jens Henningsen, Keinah (Matt) Tindol, Brenon Henningsen, Jamie Henningsen, Harris Henningsen and Evanny Henningsen; great-grandchildren, Anika Henningsen and Claire Tindol; a son-in-law, Bill Hansen of Clinton; a brother, Uwe (Asta) Petersen and sons, Sönke and Harold of Germany; a sister-in-law, Erika Petersen of Germany; nieces, Marita (Dave) Oliver of Georgia and Christa (Holger) Hansen of Germany.
Preceding Katie in death were a daughter, Iris Hansen; her parents; a brother, Wilhelm Petersen and a niece, Gunde Petersen.
