SAMPLE, KOONZ, HEHMAN, OERTEL, WARTTMAN

Mrs. James Sample, Sr. born June 15, 1865, and passed away at her home in Dewitt Iowa Clinton County September 25, 1922, following an short illness of about a week's duration. Mrs Sample was born (Swit Koonz) in Bern, Switzerland, and at eight years of age came to America residing in New York City for a time. Later going to Keokuk, Iowa, where she received her education and on December 22, 1844, was united in marriage to James Sample, who with the following children mourn her untimely passing: Charles of Pine Bluffs, Wyo.; James, of Dewitt; Herbert, of Peoria, Ill.; Mrs. H.E. Hehman, Minnie and Eva, Dewitt; Helen who is teaching at Pleasantvill, Ia. Irene, a student in Cornell college, Mt. Vernon, Ia.; Iris, the youngest child, passing away in December, 1918. A brother, C.H. Koonz, of Gresham, Wis.; two half sisters, Mrs. Fred Oertel, of Keokuk, Iowa, and Mrs. Samuel Warttman, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, also survive, as do six grandchildren. The remains were laid to rest at Elmwood cemetery.
