The Clinton Herald Monday May 27, 1929 p. 5 John Morrell, for many years a leading architect in Clinton, passed away at his home in DeKalb, Ill., early Sunday morning, May 26, in his 75th year. The funeral will be held at the Methodist church in DeKalb, Tuesday, May 28, at 10 a.m. Interment will be in Springdale cemetery, Clinton, at 3:30 p.m. the same day. A brief service will be held at the grave. John Morrell was born near Leeds, Yorkshire, England, January 5, 1855. He came to Chicago in 1880, removing to Clinton in 1903, where in partnership with his son he took over the architectural practice of Joshiah L. Rice. He removed to Sterling, Illinois and later to DeKalb, continuing in his profession. In 1880 he was married at Toronto, Canada, to Elizabeth Ann Wheldon, who passed away in August 1915. He remarried March 30, 1921. He leaves to mourn, his widow Hannah E. Morrell of DeKalb, a son A.H. Morrell of Clinton, a daughter, Mrs. William Brookhill of Thomson, Ill., five grandchildren, Victor and Beatrice Brockhill and Jean, Esther and Albert Morrell, a younger brother Joseph Morrell of Beloit, Kansas and a sister in England. Mr. Morrell had always been a staunch and faithful member of the Methodist Episcopal church, and faithfully served his church in a number of official capacities. He was a member of the Illinois Society of Architects.
