Captain Jordan Buried Today
Remains Laid to Rest in Elmwood This Afternoon
Capt. John M. Jordan, whose death occurred Saturday, was born in Canada east in 1838. His parents were Josiah H. and Catharine Jordan. In 1850 they came to Michigan. Mr. Jordan bought the home farm north of Grand Mound in 1865, in 1868 he was united in marriage with Miss Sarah Knowles [sic Nowels] of Clinton county and resided on this farm until they came to DeWitt about 15 years ago.
He enlisted in 1862 in Company C, 18th Michigan, serving 1 year and 8 months as a private, was promoted to first lieutenant; was engaged on detached duty at Nashville, Tenn., from the fall of 1863 until the spring of 1864; on the death of Captain Penoyer he succeeded to the captaincy of his company; he was at the battles of Richmond Creek, Puloski, Spring Hill and lost an arm at the siege of Nashville; was discharged Oct. 4, 1865.
He was the father of ten children, who with the wife survive. They are: Mrs. Kitty Jordan of Sutherland, Louis of Armour, S. Dak., Mrs. Jessie Chapman near DeWitt, Mrs. Edith Kane [sic Cain] of Bagley, Mrs. Joan Names of Colorado, John, Jr., of Armour, S. Dak., Mrs. Sarah Schlotfeldt of DeWitt, Mrs. Olive Reeder of Batavia, Ill.; Mrs. Marion Kindig of Collins, and Florence at home; also surviving are a brother, George Jordan, and sister, Mrs. Amanda Smith of Grand Mound.
The funeral was held this afternoon at 2:30 from the late residence conducted by Rev. J.K.Shiffer of Mechanicsville and Rev. J.J. Kidder of the Methodist Episcopal church of DeWitt. The pall-bearers were members of the N.B. Howard Post, G.A.R. to which order Captain Jordan belonged. The body was laid to rest in Elmwood cemetery.
