Clinton, Iowa - Joseph R. Dunlavy, 88, of Clinton, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, March 31, 2012, at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City, surrounded by his loving family. The Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. Tuesday, April 3rd at the Pape Funeral Home where a Rosary will be recited at 7:30 P.M. A Mass in honor of Joseph will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, April 4th at Jesus Christ, Prince of Peace Catholic Church with the Knights of Columbus serving as pallbearers. Burial will be in Clinton Lawn Cemetery with military rites by the AMVETS. A luncheon will follow at the St. Boniface Hall.
Joseph was born in Petersville, Iowa, on August 16, 1923, the son of Henry and Pearl (Lohry) Dunlavy. He was educated within DeWitt, Iowa, schools and served with the U.S. Army in the European Theatre during W.W. II. Joseph married Jane L. Rittmer on April 18, 1949 at St. Boniface Church in Clinton, Iowa. He was employed at E.I. DuPont for 36 years, retiring in 1982. Joseph was a member of Prince of Peace Parish, a 3rd and 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge, Eagle’s Club, AMVETS, VFW, and the Fulton American Legion. He called BINGO at the Moose Lodge and Eagle’s Club for many years. Joseph was a sports enthusiast, following the Chicago Cubs, Bears, and Bulls and Iowa Hawkeyes. He also enjoyed exercising at the YWCA and making friends wherever he went.
Joseph is survived by his loving wife, Jane; a daughter, Barbara (Jerry) Brown; a grand-daughter, Larissa Kraft, all of Clinton; a sister, Ruth (Jack) Hlubek of DeWitt; three step-grandchildren, Julie Brown, Jeff Brown, and Jill Schawl; and six step-great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Erin Christine; a son-in-law, Daniel Kraft; three sisters, Helen, Margaret, and Dorothy; and three brothers, Francis, James, and Jerry.
