Illinois Crash Takes Life of Dr. Mirick.
A side-swiping accident on Ill. 84 about five miles north of Fulton, Ill., took the life of Dr. Don F. Mirick, 48, of 830 5th Ave. S., shortly after 7 p.m. Saturday.
Dr. Mirick was former county medical examiner, resigning that post last year. A widely known gynecologist, he was in practice here with Medical Associates.
The critically injured doctor was brought by Fulton ambulance to Jane Lamb hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The driver of the second auto, Louis L. Harmon, 26 of 1716 N. 3rd St. and his wife Marcia, 25, were also brought to Jane Lamb for emergency treatment. Harmon was not admitted but Mrs. Harmon was held overnight for observation and released Sunday.
Illinois State Trooper Louis Dowdy said evidence at the scene of the crash indicated Dr. Mirick was driving south when a collision with the northbound Harmon car occurred. The impact ripped off a part of the left side of the doctor’s auto as it was tossed onto the shoulder then rolled over onto the right of way.
“Sam”, the doctor’s black Labrador retriever which was riding in the compact car, died instantly at the scene according to authorities.
Illinois state police said the fatality would be added to the Illinois traffic toll although the victim was pronounced dead on arrival in Iowa.
No charges have been filed pending a completion of investigation by state police.
