Clinton, Iowa - Genevieve M. “Gen” Springer, age 99 of Clinton died Thursday, June 30, 2011 at the Alverno Health Care Facility. A Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, July 5th at Prince of Peace Parish. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. Monday at the Pape Funeral Home and from 9:30 A.M. until the service time Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in St. Irenaeus Calvary Cemetery. Casket bearers will be her grandsons, Perry, Ron, Mark, Steve, Joe and Scott Springer. Honorary casket bearers will be her grand daughters, Karen Steiner, Diane Springer, Connie Shepherd, Kathy Wilden, Julie Williams and Pam O’Bleness.

Gen was born in Dimock, South Dakota on November 26, 1911, the daughter of William and Mary Untereinter Behrend. She graduated from Parkston High School in Parkston, South Dakota. Gen married Melvin W. Springer on February 18, 1935 in Parkston. They moved to Clinton in 1941. Melvin died on May 20, 2000. Gen was known as the “Record’s Lady” at Woolworth’s music department where she was employed for over 20 years, retiring in 1976. She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish. She was a Cub fan, but not a baseball fan. She enjoyed crocheting, reading and traveling.

Gen is survived by two sons, Jerry (Rose) Springer of Davenport and Ken (Nancy) Springer of Fulton; 12 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; two sisters, Betty Behrend of Mitchell, South Dakota and Marilda Myer of Sioux Falls and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sisters and two brothers.
