Luella H. (Mrs. Harry) Burzlaff, 96 of DeWitt, died Tuesday afternoon, June 21, 2011 in Westwing Place, DeWitt.

Luella Burzlaff was born Luella Hilda Marie Meier on October 21, 1914 in Donahue, Iowa. Her parents were Fred and Hilda (Husen) Meier. She married Harry Burzlaff November 26, 1938 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Grand Mound, now Immanuel. The couple farmed at Rural Grand Mound, until 1975 at which time they retired to DeWitt. Luella was a homemaker much of her life raising their seven children.

She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Grand Mound, and was a former member of Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt, where she belonged to the Anna and Sewing Circles. Luella was a 4-H Leader and a member of the Grant Township Homemakers Club. She also was a member of the Thursday Afternoon Club for over 40 years. Luella was a loyal Westwing Place volunteer for many years. Her God, Church and Family meant the world to Luella. She enjoyed helping others and especially enjoyed baking cookies with her grandchildren.

Surviving are her children, Donald (Betty) Burzlaff and Roger (Connie) Burzlaff, Grand Mound, Dorothy Burmeister of Jonesboro, Georgia, Dolores (Dick) Blunck of Omaha, Nebraska, Joyce (Alan McDermott) Keegan of Bettendorf, Janice (David) Farber of Galesburg, Illinois, and Beth (Donald) Rupe, Davenport; grandchildren, Dennis Burzlaff, DeeAnn (Richard) Cheney, Jay Burzlaff, Jeff (Andrea) Burzlaff, Jennifer (Matt) Sanderson, Danette (Mike) Haag, Danny (Kim) Burzlaff, Dawn Wright, Donna Wieneke, Gary Burmeister, David (Monika) Blunck, Darin (Annie) Blunck, Lisa Blunck, Deb (Steve) Moore, Brian (Charity) Farber, Kerry (Amber) Burzlaff, Karna (Chris) Reicks, Kendra (BJ) Yaddof, Annina Rupe and Ian Rupe; 30 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild; a sister, Lucy Lee Petersen, Calamus; a sister-in-law, Lois Meier and Rose Burzlaff, DeWitt as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding Luella in death in addition to her husband, Harry were her parents, a son-in-law, Wayne Burmeister, four brothers, Ralph, Grover, Donald and Vernon.

Family and friends may visit at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 3:00 until 7:00 p.m. Thursday, June 23, 2011. A Service of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 24, 2011 in Immanuel Lutheran Church, Grand Mound. The Rev. Arthur Rickman will officiate. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Grand Mound. Memorials are suggested to Immanuel Lutheran Church, Grand Mound, or Westwing Place Garden Project.

Pallbearers will be grandsons, Dennis Burzlaff, Jay Burzlaff, David Blunck, Jeff Burzlaff, Gary Burmeister, Darin Blunck, Dan Burzlaff, Brian Farber, Kerry Burzlaff and Ian Rupe. Honorary pallbearers will be granddaughters, DeeAnn Cheney, Dawn Wright, Donna Wieneke, Lisa Blunck, Jennifer Sanderson, Deb Moore, Danette Haag, Karna Reicks, Kendra Yaddof and Annina Rupe.
