Clinton - Sister Mary Eleanor Dunning, OSF, age 89 of Clinton died Monday, May 30, 2011 at Mercy Medical Center North in Clinton. A Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, June 3, 2011 at The Canticle, 841 13th Ave. No. The Rev. James Keenan will preside. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:30 P.M. Thursday, June 2nd at The Canticle where a rosary will be recited at 4:00 P.M. and a Scripture Service at 6:30 P.M. Burial will be in St. Irenaeus Calvary Cemetery. Casket bearers will be relatives, friends and members of the Sisters of St. Francis. The Pape Funeral Home is assisting.

Sister Eleanor was born in Williamstown, Missouri on February 25, 1922 the daughter of Thomas and Lottie (Schmid) Dunning. She attended Clark County Elementary School in Missouri and graduated from St. Patrick High School, St. Patrick, Missouri. Sister received her AA Degree from Mount St. Clare College, Clinton; RN, Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, Burlington, Iowa; BA in Elementary Education, Viterbo College, La Crosse, Wisconsin. Sister Eleanor held an Iowa Elementary Permanent Professional Teaching Certificate and Iowa Nursing Certificate.

Sister Eleanor joined the congregation of the Sisters of St. Francis in Clinton on September 6, 1941 and professed her final vows on August 12, 1947. Sister Eleanor’s 51 years of active ministry included both teaching and nursing. Most recently from 1987 until her retirement, she served in Freeport, Grand Bahama Island, Bahamas as a teacher and librarian at Mary Star of the Sea School. Together with two other Clinton Franciscans, she had opened the school in 1960 and served as principal until 1963.

She also had taught at St. Patrick’s in Clinton, and St. Gerald’s in Oak Lawn, Illinois, as well as serving at Mount St. Clare College as house mother and nurse at Durham Hall; and as nurse at Mercy Hospital, Burlington, Iowa, at Grinnell General Hospital where she opened a coronary care unit in 1970; at Mount Alverno for Aged, and at Mercy Hospital, Clinton. She retired to The Canticle in 1999.

Sister Eleanor is survived by her sister, Doris (Guy) Spence of Kahoka, Missouri and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister. Online condolences may be left at www.papefh.com
