Clinton - Graham H. Espey age 79 of Clinton died Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at Mercy Medical Center North in Clinton. Services will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Monday, May 30th at the Pape Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 11:00 A.M. until the service time Monday at the funeral home. Following the services cremation rites will be accorded.

Graham was born in Denver, Colorado on December 10, 1931, the son of Thomas G. and Thelma “Betty” (Stafford) Espey. As a young child he attended grade school in Mesa Verde, where his father was an officer with the WPA. He graduated from high school in Denver and received his BA in Education from the University of Colorado in Boulder. He received a fellowship from the University of Wyoming and had additional studies at both the University of Northern Iowa and Iowa State. Graham was a veteran of the Korean War, serving as a First Lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers with the U.S. Army.

Graham married Karen Schiltz on June 10, 1961 in Denver. He taught Social Studies and U.S. History at Loveland High School in Loveland, Colorado from 1960 to 1962. He taught at Clinton High School for 32 years, from 1962 until he retired in 1994. He specialized in teaching the history and culture of Native Americans. Graham was a member of Clinton Education Association and had served as Vice-President in 1967 and as President from 1968 to 1969. He was a life member of the National Education Association of the United States, the Iowa State Education Association and did volunteer work in the political field. He was a member of the Clinton Gun Club. He hand crafted black powder muzzle loading rifles and was a champion marksman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and making Navajo Indian-type jewelry out of silver, turquoise and coral.

Graham is survived by his wife Karen; a daughter, Deborah (Doyle) McClintock of Washington, D.C.; two sons, Michael (Chunyen) Espey of Great Falls, Virginia and Paul (Natalie) Espey near Atlanta, GA; two grandchildren, Alison and Benjamin; a sister, Sue White of Denver; two cousins, Dr. William Espey and John Merson and 25 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
