Goose Lake - Donald F. Stolk, age 83 of Goose Lake, Iowa, died Monday, May 23, 2011 at the Mercy North Medical Center in Clinton, surrounded by family after a courageous battle with a lengthy illness. His strength and resiliency was an inspiration to his family, and when he was able, he still showed his wit and sense of humor that could bring about a smile or a laugh.

Celebration of life services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, May 27th at Elvira Zion Lutheran Church in Elvira. where he was a life long member. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 7:00 P.M. Thursday, May 26th at the Pape Funeral Home, 2308 Pershing Blvd., Clinton, Iowa, and from 9:30 A.M. until the service time Friday at the church. Burial will be at the Center Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Elvira Zion Lutheran Church, Skyline Center, or the Goose Lake Lions Club.

Donald was born in Clinton, Iowa on June 29, 1927, the son of Fred and Clara Henningsen Stolk. He graduated from Goose Lake High School in 1944. Don married Jewel Lamp on April 20, 1947 in Preston, Iowa and they farmed together in the Elvira area until Jewel died on June 6, 1989. He continued actively farming until 1992, when he semi-retired to become a truck driver. He hauled milk from the Preston Creamery, drove for A.D.M., Dwain Johnson Trucking and Schmidt Farms, making many new friends along the way. He continued to be interested in anything involving life on the farm.

Don was a member of the Elvira Zion Lutheran Church where he served on the church council for many years. He was a member of the Farm Bureau, Goose Lake Lions Club, Center Grove Cemetery Board, and the Skyline Center Board. He was also a member of the Clinton County Sheriff's Posse in the late 60's and early 70's. He had a lifelong love of farming. He had a great sense of humor and wit and always enjoyed his family and friends. He was especially proud of and always enjoyed being around his grandchildren and great grandchildren. In earlier years he and Jewel were avid bowlers and card players. Don continued enjoying his friendships with the several card clubs that he was a member of until just this past year. Even after his younger years of snickering at people chasing a "little white ball" around, he tried his hand at, and even enjoyed playing golf. In his later years, he enjoyed traveling to many areas of the country with his friend, Lola Jackson

Donald is survived by two sons, Dennis Stolk of Bettendorf and Dwain Stolk of rural Clinton; three daughters, Debra Stolk of DeWitt, Darla (Lonnie) Adrian of Charlotte and Denise (Gary) Baughman of Bettendorf; 10 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; two sisters, Lois (Arthur) Farwell of Preston, and Audrey (James) Krogman of Bryant, and a special friend, Lola Jackson of Clinton as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Jewel and a daughter-in-law, Donna Stolk of Bettendorf. Don was a great husband, father, grandfather and more recently, great grandfather and will be missed by all who knew him. Online condolences may be left at www.papefh.com
