Dale Rathje, 86, of Grand Mound, died on Sunday May 29, 2011 at Wheatland Manor.

Dale was born December 23, 1924 in Grand Mound to Gilbert J. and Mildred (Harrington) Rathje. He graduated from Grand Mound High School in 1942. Dale was inducted into the United States Navy in 1943 and attended Naval Radio School at the University of Idaho. He served aboard liberty ships S.S. Charlotte P. Gilman, S.S. mariscal Sucre, and S.S. makaweli in the Asiatic-Pacific theater in the North, Central, and South Pacific. He married Mary Louise Hahn November 29, 1947 at Sacred Heart Church, Clinton. He was Audio Engineer for WQUA Radio in Moline. In 1950, he was appointed Postmaster at Grand Mound, Iowa, where he served until his retirement in 1987.

Dale is survived by his children, Monna (Chuck) Knutsen, Fountain Hills, AZ; Terry (Lorie) Rathje, Long Grove; Dean (Lori) Rathje, Ely; Jeff (Lora) Rathje, McCausland; Mark (Kelly) Rathje, Camanche. Grandchildren: Abbie Friedman, Jessica Eslick, Sarah Graham, Levi Rathje, Amy Morkus, John Rathje, Joshua Rathje, Samantha Rathje, Zachary Rathje and Benjamin Rathje. Step Grandchildren: Emily, Dylan and Colby Azinger. Great-grandchildren: Landon Friedman, Trey Friedman, Derek Friedman, Carter Eslick, Brady Eslick, Grant Graham, Cole Graham, Grace Graham, Brock Rathje, Sage Rathje, Laura Morkus, Bryce Rathje, Adelaide Rathje and Paisley Rathje.

Dale was preceded in death by his wife Mary Lou in October 2000 and his brother, Gilbert L. Rathje.

Funeral services will be 10:00 A. M. Thursday, June 2 at SS Philip and James Catholic Church, Grand Mound. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Grand Mound. Dale's grandchildren will be pallbearers.

Military graveside rites by Grand Mound American Legion.

Visitation will be 3:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 1 at Schultz Funeral Home, Grand Mound. A scripture service will be held at 7 p.m.
