Esther Brown, daughter of Willie and Plummie Brown, was born on September 5, 1928 in Webb, Mississippi, the youngest of ten children. Esther married Joseph Fairchild in December, 1945 and had three children, Ruthie Dell of Rockford, IL; Earnestine of Rockford, IL; and Jerome Dennis of Clinton, IA. After the death of her husband, Esther with her three children moved to Chicago, IL. She then married Joseph Hughes and had two children, Annette of Joliet, IL and Willie James (Julia) of Clinton, IA. Esther was employed by the Bayer Family as a gourmet cook and was later promoted to receptionist and dispatcher for linen supplies to the White House. She was later employed as a switchboard operator where she met McKinley Lee. Esther and her children moved to Clinton, IA where McKinley followed and they were married. They had one son, McKinley (Malik) Lee Jr. (Roshelle) of Fresno, CA. Esther, along with a few members of the community, co-founded the Victory Center, a safe haven for the homeless, in Clinton, IA. She served on its board for two terms and was receptionist for eleven years. Esther is survived by her husband; six children; 15 grandchildren; and a host of great and great-great grandchildren. She is predeceased by one granddaughter, Aceneen Williams; brothers Joel; Henry; Oliver (OK); Willie; James; John L.; Doc Brown; and sisters Corrine and Acena (Aceneen). Esther enjoyed people but truly loved God. She felt most at home in her church whether she was instructing the ushers or cooking and serving food. Memorials should be made to Zion Lutheran Church, 925 5th Avenue, Rockford, IL, 61104 or Victory Center in Clinton, IA. Funeral services will be held at Church of the Open Door, 816 13th Avenue North, Clinton, IA, 52732, on Friday, April 29, 2011 at 1:00pm with visitation preceding at noon. Burial will be at Pine Grove Cemetery, 1708 2nd Avenue South, Clinton, IA.
