Les was born in Scott County on March 8, 1934, the son of Clarence and Almeda Rohlfs Denklau. He graduated from Davenport High School in 1952. He was also a graduate of DeVry Technical Institute with a degree in electronics. Les married Janet Muhs on November 19, 1955 in Davenport. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

After graduating from DeVry, Les worked for Union Supply Company in Davenport until 1956. In 1958 Union Supply opened a store in Clinton with Les as the manager. Les bought his own building at 100 So. 4th St. and after a few years, bought out the company’s Clinton inventory. The business was known for state of the art stereo equipment, television and garage door openers. Union Supply also was unique that it carried parts for dealers who at that time actually repaired malfunctioning equipment. They were the first store to rent out movies on VHS. Les closed the doors of Union Supply upon his retirement in 1996.

Missing all the people he had come to know with being in business all those years he joined South Gate Motors as a courtesy driver until 2003 and later joined Citizens First Bank as their courier driver. Les was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose and AMVETS. He enjoyed working in the yard, gardening and taking walks with his wife.

Les is survived by his wife Janet; two daughters, Cindy Kuehl of Independence, KS and Cathy Denklau of Clinton; a grandson, Jason Kuehl of Kansas; a brother, Wayne Denklau of Wayne, NB; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister-in-law, Lorraine Denklau; and a brother-in-law, Max Selzer. Memorials may by made to the Clinton Humane Society or the Winger/Heiar Open.
