Virgil W. Meyer, 73, DeWitt, died Thursday morning, February 24, 2011 at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City.

Virgil Wayne Meyer was born December 22, 1937 in Bennett, to Herman P. and Florence May (Fischer) Meyer. He married Rose A. Grimm, July 11, 1970 at Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt. Virgil worked for C & J Farm Service, DeWitt, for over 30 years until retirement in 1997. He and Rose also managed the Winsther Motel in DeWitt from 1997 until 2003.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, spending time outdoors, gardening and doing puzzles.

Surviving are his wife, Rose; children, Judith, DeWitt, Rebecca (Chris Smith), Clive, Terry (Janeen), DeWitt; granddaughters, Karna and Lydia Smith and Adelynne Meyer; a step-grandson, Spenser Smith; a sister, Joyce (Merwyn) Scheckel, DeWitt; a sister-in-law, Donna Meyer, DeWitt.

Preceding Virgil in death were his parents, a brother, John and a step-grandson, Kevin Smith.

Family and friends may visit at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 1:00 until 2:45 p.m. Saturday, February 26, 2011. A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday in the Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Peter Hoft officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery, DeWitt.
