Eleanor Peterson

Eleanor “Ellie” A. Peterson, 81, of Columbia, Missouri, died Thursday, February 10, 2011 at the Alverno Health Care Facility, Clinton, Iowa.

There will be service or visitation at this time. Per her wishes the body will be cremated. Private family graveside services will be held in the Shaffton Cemetery in the spring. The Clinton Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Homes and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

Eleanor Ann Major was born on February 5, 1930 in Mason City, Iowa, the daughter of Harvey and Maud (Bullis) Major. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1948. She married Galyn Peterson on September 24, 1949 in St. Louis, Missouri. They were divorced in 1981. He died in 1996.

She was a homemaker until moving to Des Moines and worked for Townsend Engineering. After moving to Columbia, Missouri in 1971 she was employed as an assistant underwriter for Shelter Insurance before retiring in 1995. After retiring, she also served as a house mother for the Kappa Delta Sorority at the University of Missouri in Columbia for several years. She was very well read on the history of the Civil War.

She is survived by one daughter: Linda (Jonathan) Shaff of Clinton and her three children, Dr. Lori Reed of Omaha, NE, Lisa (Kevin) Wagner of Madison, WI and Lance Reed of Iowa City. Her three sons, Neil (Donna) Peterson of Jefferson City, Missouri and their sons, Nick of Tempe, AZ, Wesley of Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, TX, and Sam of Springfield, MO and John (Julie) Peterson of Marietta, Georgia, and their daughters, Amanda of Marietta, GA and Elizabeth of Athens, GA., also Chuck (Pamela) Peterson of Raleigh, North Carolina. She also survived by one new great-granddaughter, Lucy Wagner, of Madison, WI. Ellie will also be missed by three dear friends from Columbia: Scott Schmidt, Barb Gose and Melanie Stapleton.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers: Robert and Max.

Memorials can be made to the Sarah Harding Home or The Alverno both in Clinton.
