Capt. Charles Witt

Captain Charles A. Witt, Clinton PD (Ret.), 65, of Clinton, died Tuesday at Mercy Medical Center, North Campus after a courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral Services will be 9:30am, Saturday, January 29, 2011 at Zion Lutheran Church, Clinton. Burial will follow in the Clinton Lawn Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Evan Witt, Ron Holmes, Larry Witt, Jim Witt, Robert Witt, Barry Buntemeyer, Brent Buntemeyer, and Rick Andersen. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Police Chief Brian Guy, and current and retired members of the Clinton Police Department. Visitation will be Friday from 3:00-8:00pm at the Clinton Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Homes and Crematory.

Charles Alan Witt was born on July 11, 1945 in Clinton, Iowa, the son of Louis “Oogie” and Helen (Petersen) Witt. He married Susan Lange on August 13, 1977 at Zion Lutheran Church, Clinton.

Chuck was a 1963 graduate of Clinton High School.

Chuck began his career as a police officer with the Clinton Police Department on July 17, 1966. While a police officer he attended and graduated from Clinton Community College and St. Ambrose with a Bachelor of Arts Degree with a criminal justice major and a minor in psychology. He worked his way through the ranks as corporal, sergeant, lieutenant, and Criminal Investigation Department commander. He retired on June 30, 2010 as captain.

Chuck was a member of Zion Lutheran Church where he served as a trustee and usher, a member of the Quad City Coucil of Police Chiefs, the Iowa State Police Association, and the Citizen Police Academy Alumni. He was also a member of the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau and received the Governor’s Safety Award in 2003. He was also a former assistant Scout Master for Troop 642.

Chuck loved working with wood making “love gifts” for his family and friends. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, lighthousing with his wife around the Great Lakes, photography, spending the holidays with his family in Galena, and loved his dog Sadie.

Chuck is survived by his wife: Sue of Clinton; two sons: Troy Witt of Mesa, Arizona and Ryan Witt of Ankeny, Iowa; one daughter: Heidi Witt of Clinton; his mother: Helen Cook and her husband Clayton of Clinton; one brother: David (Deb) Witt of Camanche; and one nephew: Evan Witt. He was preceded in death by his father, his grandparents; and his mother and father-in-law: Walt and Lorraine Lange.

Memorials can be made to Zion Lutheran Church or the Citizen Police Academy Alumni.
