Bryant, Iowa - Bonnie Jo (Scott) Marx, 77, passed away on Sunday, October 3, 2010, at Genesis Westwing in DeWitt, IA. Visitation is at Pape Funeral Home on Thursday, October 7th from 3:00 – 8:00 PM. Funeral services will be held at Ascension Lutheran Church, Goose Lake, IA at 10:00 AM on Friday, October 8th, with burial following at Center Grove Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Dustin Rickertsen, Brandon Rickersten, Reece Rickertsen, Forrest Marx, Payton Marx, and Jay Gradert.
Bonnie Jo Scott was born July 25, 1933, to Josephine (Schmidt) Scott and Henry Scott in Maquoketa, IA. She was the ninth child in the family and the first to be born in a hospital. Bonnie’s mother, Josephine, died due to complications with childbirth. Henry decided to raise the other eight children, but realized that he could not care for a newborn. Ernie and Beulah (Schocker) Scott were thrilled to adopt their niece Bonnie Jo. They were devoted parents to her and their young son Allen. Bonnie was raised as a cousin to her biological siblings and remained in contact with them throughout her life.
Bonnie graduated from Goose Lake High School in 1951. She attended Iowa Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls, IA and graduated from Mount St. Clare College in Clinton, IA with a teaching certificate. She taught elementary school until she started her own family and later returned to the classroom as a substitute teacher.
On November 22, 1953, she married Arthur Clarence Marx in Preston, IA. For years Arthur and Bonnie farmed and owned & operated Marx Insurance Agency at Bryant. Bonnie was a charter member of Ascension Lutheran Church in Goose Lake where she served on the church council and taught Sunday school. She was an avid supporter of Northeast School District and worked to establish the Northeast Fine Arts Boosters. She was also a 4-H leader for many years.
Bonnie was preceded in death by her husband Arthur C. Marx, who passed away on January 9, 1999; her birth parents, Josephine and Henry Scott; and her biological siblings Ruth, Kenneth, Edith, Alice, Vera, and Helen. She was also preceded in death by the loving family that raised her Ernest and Beulah (Schocker) Scott Schroeder, Allen Scott, and her step-father Rudolf Schroeder.
She is survived by four children and ten grandchildren: Floyd (Laurie) Marx and their children Forrest, Payton, and Allyse of Bryant, IA; Janet (David) Bergman and their daughters Jenna and Katie of Sugar Grove, IL; Aaron Marx of Goose Lake, IA, with daughters Ashley (Leon) Truelson, and Jessica; Gwenn (Jerry) Rickertsen, and sons Dustin, Brandon, and Reece of Bryant, IA. She is also survived by siblings Henry Scott and Iola (Polly) Stamp. In lieu of flowers, memorial funds have been established. Online condolences may be left at www.papefh.com
