Sibyl Mary Yackshaw, 88, of Clinton, passed away Thursday, October 7, 2010, at the Alverno Nursing Home.

Funeral services are Sunday, 4pm at Lemke Funeral Home – South Chapel. Visitation is Saturday from 4 to 7 pm at Lemke Funeral Homes – South Chapel. Burial will be Monday at 11 am at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Sibyl was born August 5, 1922, in Lucas County, Iowa, on the family farm to Thomas and Anna (Kaisar) Gajkowski. Sibyl graduated from Chariton High School, Chariton, IA. She proudly served in the U. S. Navy from 1942 to 1945 as a radio operator stationed in Memphis, Tennessee. After leaving the Navy she worked in Davenport.

She married John Yackshaw on January 29, 1949, at St. Mary’s Church, Clinton.

Sibyl was a homemaker but also worked at the Clinton Public Library and retired from the Clinton County Auditor’s office in 1990. She was a member of the Mercy Ladies Auxiliary, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and Prince of Peace Parish. Sibyl was the first woman in history to be installed as Vice Commander for the June Van Meter, Post 190, American Legion. She was active and held positions with the Clinton County Democratic party.

Sibyl is survived by her son, John (Sally Schwartz) Yackshaw, Seattle, WA; Daughter, Patricia (Peter) Costello, Santa Cruz, CA; Daughter, Katie (Larry) Sullivan, Clinton, IA; and son, Michael (Kathy) Yackshaw, Clinton, IA; 5 grandchildren, John Dylan Bergmann, Erin Moran, Jacob Yackshaw, Sophia Yackshaw and Anna Yackshaw and special friends Bill and Helen Reinhart.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, infant son, William Thomas and a sister, Marie.
