Donald W. Powell, 85, of Camanche, passed away Saturday, September 18, 2010, at University of Iowa Hospitals, Iowa City.

Funeral services are Friday, September 24, 2010, at 10:30am at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1519 Washington Blvd S., Camanche, with Pastor Linda Keeter Schultz and Pastor Horst Hehr officiating.

Visitation will be Thursday, from 4 to 7pm at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1519 Washington Blvd S. Camanche. Burial will be in Clinton Lawn Cemetery.
Lemke Funeral Homes are assisting the family.

Donald was born June 20, 1925, in Clinton to Maitland and Violet (Hartson) Powell. He is survived by his wife, Helen of Camanche, 1 daughter, Kim L. (Duane) Ongie, Fairfax, Ia; 1 son, Donald C. (Julie) Powell, Bondurant, IA; 1 foster daughter, Malika (Steve) Lawson, Colona, IL; 4 grandchildren, Wesley Powell, Kelsey Powell, Aminda Ongie, Kyle Ongie; 1 brother, Jack (Florence) Powell, Savanna, IL; and 1 sister, Dorothy Marr, WI.

Donald was married to Helen Wenzel on June 1, 1947, in Clinton, IA. He worked for Elmwood Dairy, part time doing farm work, the City of Camanche, and then for DuPont as a Machine Operator retiring after 39 years. He was a charter member of Camanche Immanuel Lutheran Church, a lifetime member of American X-POW (National, State and Local), life member of Camanche VFW, life member of American Legion, life member of Disabled American Veterans, the 45th Division of the 180th Army Infantry. Donald was a volunteer for many years for the American Red Cross and a foster parent for 20 plus years.

Donald served in the US Army during WWII from August 25, 1943 to November 26, 1945. He was a American X-POW for 9 months in Germany twice. Donald was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Gene. Memorials are to be established. Online condolences may be viewed at www.lemkefuneral.com
