The Clinton Herald; February 24, 1948; p. 8; Joseph J. Murphy, 75, of 324 Fourth avenue North, died at 5:45 p.m. Monday in Mercy hospital. He was secretary of the Loyal Order of Moose lodge, 363, for 19 years and at one time was forman of the composing room of the former Clinton Advertiser, a daily newspaper.
A patient in Mercy hospital for six days and had been ill several weeks. Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday in St. Patrick's church. The Rev. H.F. Finefield, paston of St. Patrick's church, will say the requiem mass. Burial will be in St. Irenaeus cemetery.
Chapter, 474, W.O.O.M. will meet at 7:30 p.m. today to go to the Snell funeral home as a group to pay respects. St. Edward's council, 707, Knights of Columbus, will meet at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Snell funeral home to say the rosary, led by Rev. Fr. Finefield.
Mr. Murphy was born Nov. 18, 1872, in Bryant, the son of James and Bridget Lynch Murphy. He married Minnie Barry, Nov. 18. 1902 in Clinton. He was a member of St. Patrick's church, the Moose and the Knights of Columbus. He also was a member of the Clinton Typographical Union No. 334.
Surviving are thre daughters, Mrs. Robert Logan, Des Moines; Miss Ruth Murphy, Washington, D.C. and Alice at home; one son, Paul V., Dvenport; two sisters, Miss Lucille and Miss Winifred Murphy, one brother, Thomas V., all of Clinton, and one grandchild. He was preceeded in death by his parents, his wife, one child in infancy and two sisters, Sister Mary Amata, B.V.M. and Miss Agnes Murphy.
