Milwaukee, WI, formerly of Savanna, IL - Alfred E. Ketelsen age 93 of Milwaukee, formerly of Savanna died Saturday, September 4, 2010 at Zilber Family Hospice in Milwaukee. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 8th at 11:00 A.M. in St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Savanna, IL. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 7:00 P.M. Tuesday at the Pape Funeral Home, Clinton and Wednesday 10:00 A.M. until the service hour at the church. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery in Clinton. Casket bearers will be his 18 grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be Arthur Ketelsen, Walter “Tiny” Loomis, and James Themas. Memorials may be given to Zilber Family Hospice or Palliative Care Team of Froedtert Hospital, both in Milwaukee, WI.

Alfred was born on Nov. 21, 1916 in Welton Township, IA, the son of Nicolai and Augusta (Fredrigsen) Ketelsen. Alfred graduated from Clinton High School. He served in the US Navy, on the USS Ashtabula, during World War II. Alfred married Grace Fanger on Oct. 20, 1940 in Clinton, IA; she died in 1988. His first job was as a woodworker at Curtis Manufacturing in Clinton, IA. Alfred was a farmer most of his life, farming in both Iowa and Illinois. Also worked at the Savanna Ordnance Depot, Clinton Corn Processing (ADM), and as a toll taker on the Savanna-Sabula Bridge. He was a member of St. Peters Lutheran Church, Savanna, IL where he served on the church council for many years. He was a member of the Sabula American Legion and VFW. He served as an Election Judge for Carroll County. He enjoyed spending time with family, fishing, hunting, playing cards, and gardening. Alfred will be sorely missed by his faithful companion, Maggie-Dog.

Alfred is survived by his eight children, Kathleen (Glenn) Bultman, Milwaukee, WI, David (Judi) Ketelsen, Crookston, NE, Sandra (Craig) Hansen, Miles, IA, Ronald (Molly) Ketelsen, Salt Lake City, UT, Linda (John) Mizlo, Cary, IL, Cheryl (Rick) Greve, Des Moines, IA, Mary (Rick) Smith, Sydney, IL, Nancy (Jim) Hunt, Batavia, IL; 28 grandchildren, 46 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren; a brother, Arthur (Pearl) Ketelsen of Sabula, IA; a sister, Henrietta Schmidt of Le Claire, IA; and several nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Grace in 1988, son, James in 1980, 2nd wife, Margaret in 2001, three brothers, and three sisters.
