Roy Sparks

Roy Harlan Sparks, 69, passed away Monday, August 16, 2010, at his residence surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 21, 2010, at 9:30 a.m. at Prince of Peace Parish Catholic Church in Clinton, Iowa, with Father Joseph Nguyen, Father David Steinle and Deacon Mike Sheil officiating. Visitation will be Friday, 3 to 8 p.m. at Prince of Peace Parish. Burial will be in Rossiter Cemetery in Charlotte. Lemke Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.

Roy was born July 3, 1941, to Raymond and Vera (Badtke) Sparks in Clinton, Iowa. He was baptized into the Lutheran Faith then later baptized into the Catholic Faith. Roy was one of the first Eucharistic Ministers at Assumption Catholic Church. He attended the County Home Country School thru 3rd grade and then Charlotte School for 4th grade. Roy then attended Elwood School from 5th through 12th grades graduating in 1959.

Roy married Mary Lou Hyde on April 8, 1961, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Clinton, Iowa. He worked in 1959 for Kenny Simmons hauling livestock. From 1959 – 1962 he worked for Farmer’s Supply in Elwood. In 1962 he started farming in the Charlotte area until 1987. From 1969 – 1977 he worked at Chemplex Chemical Company. From 1981 – 1987 he was in partnership of Sparks Trucking with his son, Joe. Starting in 1987 he worked at Equistar Chemical until retirement in 2007. From 2008 until 2010 he worked for Home Depot as was named employee of the month in February, 2010. Roy was a former member of the Clinton County Sheriff’s reserves. He also was a member of Farm Bureau and NFO (National Farmers Organization). Roy was a former member of Assumption Catholic Church for 48 years and recently had become a member of Prince of Peace Parish.

Roy is survived by his wife, Mary Lou; 2 sons, Joe (Kelly) Sparks of Charlotte, Jim (Laurie) Sparks of DeWitt; 4 daughters, Julie (Craig) Yoerger of Bennett; Jeannine (Darin) Stoll of Goose Lake; Jolene (Brandon) Eberhart of Goose Lake; Jessica (Chad) Hentze of Maquoketa; and a special friend, that was like a son, Paul (Lynn) Heiar of Charlotte, IA.; 16 grandchildren, Ashley, Lindsey, (Zach Lange), and Justin Sparks; Amy (Brandon) Gluesing, Kim (Michael) Fischer; Alishia, Steven and Jenna Yoerger; Brittany, Courtney and Dawson Stoll; Brandon Franzen, Danica and Curtis Eberhart; Kaylin and Ethan Hentze; 3 great grandchildren, Emma, Gluesing; Drew and Delaney Fischer; 1 brother, Gene (Marki) Sparks; 1 brother-in-law, Dennis (Linda) Hahn; 4 nephews, Keith, Kennie (Abbey), Dale (Stephanie) and Dean Sparks; 1 niece, Danielle Sparks; 2 Aunts, Darlene (Jerry) Ritenour and Elverda “Cookie” (Lynn) Garlough; and many in-laws whom he considered his own family.

Roy was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Vera Sparks, 2 sisters, Carol Sparks and Bonnie Hahn, 2 nieces, Melissa and Michele Hahn; a granddaughter, Kristina Yoerger, a great grandson, Andrew Sparks-Gluesing; his maternal and paternal grandparents, 2 Uncles, Maynard Sparks and Arnold Badtke, and an Aunt Viola (Badtke) Olson.

Pallbearers will be grandchildren and honorary pallbearers will be great grandchildren. Memorials are to be established.
